Protein and pedagogy: pioneering indigenization of biochemistry in China by Szu-Chih Liu
-
Abstract
In 20th-century biochemistry history of China, Szu-Chih Liu acted as a central bridge in both academic genealogy and knowledge indigenization. Liu inherited the methodology and value established by China's earliest generation of biochemistry trailblazers, notably Hsien Wu, while fostering biomedical talents. Liu led the unification of biochemistry terminology in Chinese and pioneered vernacular biochemistry textbooks. In a broader perspective, his leading endeavor for unify biochemistry terminology and to curate biochemistry textbooks in Chinese also forged a lasting epistemological influence upon generations of biomedical students, imperceptibly shaping the robust trajectory and dynamic momentum of biochemistry in China in the latter half of the 20th century.
